In a typical endoscopic cauterization procedure, the patient would be sedated and the area of bleeding would be located. A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is inserted into the esophagus and stomach. The endoscope has a light and a camera attached to it. A surgeon would use a tiny metal probe to apply heat to the bleeding area, and then apply pressure with his finger on the probe. The bleeding stops almost instantly.
